Each month a Women’s Foundation Grantee Partner will be featured in the e-newsletter and on the Foundation’s blog. This is where the Grantee Partners tell their story…about how their helping Kansas City’s women and girls become more economically self-sufficient.
Learning about college, planning a career, figuring out how to pay for it, giving back through community service projects…it’s all a part of the program for the young women of Awesome Ambitions.
Awesome Ambitions is a grassroots mentoring organization that works with young women in the Kansas City public and charter schools. For more than 16 years we have helped students envision a future that is safe, secure and personally satisfying. Encouraging the young women to value themselves and to pursue choices that build self-esteem are key to our program.
Education and job and career planning are crucial pieces of our program. In February, Awesome Ambitions hosted a college fair with representatives of 20 colleges and sessions for students and their parents on planning and researching financial aid. In March, the focus shifts to job skills and career planning. In addition to a nearly day-long Saturday session at UMKC’s School of Nursing, our young women will have the opportunity to job-shadow professional women during their spring break week. In April, they will learn how their education directly affects their earning potential by participating in a series of financial workshops.
Awesome Ambitions is a hands-on organization, led by a working board and supported by community volunteers. We have no paid staff and the people and organizations who offer their time and supports are committed to helping grow healthy, successful young women. In return, we expect commitment from our young ladies, whether it’s getting to the Saturday session on time, remembering to bring school progress reports or asking for help with a problem.
It is so rewarding to see the young women of Awesome Ambitions grow in confidence and competence. They really are impressive. We hope you can meet them.
The Women’s Foundation program The Rachel Alexandra Girls Grant Project granted $1,470 to Awesome Ambitions for their “Financial Literacy Web-based Project.” To learn more, head over to their website. If you’d like to learn more about the Rachel Alexandra Girls, click here.
