Volunteer with The Women’s Foundation today! WFGKC’s Volunteer program assists staff with the completion of specific tasks. WFGKC provides volunteer opportunities to individuals who are interested and supportive of the mission of The Foundation.
Internship: The Women’s Foundation works with the metropolitan community to identify young women who would be interested in an internship at The Foundation. Interns would work with all staff members and be introduced to all aspects of The Foundation.
Professional Services: This important group of people use their professional talents to benefit The Foundation. They include graphic design, printing, photography, marketing, public relations, human resources, finance, investment and technology.
Event Support: If you have a special talent working on events, let us know! The Women’s Foundation has several committees that support three events annually.
- Grants Awards Luncheon – The Grants Awards Luncheon is held the first Friday in December and is the largest fundraising event for The Women’s Foundation. It is a sold out event and generates over $200,000 annually.
- The Women’s Foundation Golf Classic – One of Kansas City’s best golf tournaments and exclusively for women. Golfers of all skill levels participate and prizes are awarded in two flights: Championship and Social. An auction is also part of the golf classic.
- A Celebration of Women Commemorative Journal – The commemorative journal has been published annually since 1993 to recognize and celebrate area women and girls. The journal provides an opportunity to honor remarkable women and girls by offering a glimpse of the deeply important and enormously varied ways honorees affect their families, community, and professions. The book is unveiled at a genuine “feel good” event.

Marketing and PR: The Marketing and PR Committee works to let people know who we are and what we do and to get people involved. The committee’s focus is Speaker’s Bureau, E-communications and strategic partnerships.
Voices in Philanthropy: Three years ago, more than 100 women and men became a voice in philanthropy. They became a part of a very special and unique network of philanthropic individuals who support the work of The Women’s Foundation of Greater Kansas City. The committee works to identify, secure and cultivate V.I.P.s across the metropolitan area. It is a collective voice of women and men from all ages and backgrounds.
Volunteer: The committee works to recruit, train and care for the foundation’s volunteers. The committee has developed and implemented a volunteer program that includes outreach/recruitment, orientation and retention.

How did you become involved with The Women’s Foundation? How long have you been involved?
I became involved with WFGKC in 2008 when I moved to this area after having lived and worked in cities all over the U.S. However, throughout my professional career, I have been interested in issues impacting women and minorities and have had the good fortune of working on and positively impacting matters affecting these groups.
Giving back to the community was a value that my mother and father instilled in me, my sister, and four brothers. One person who impacted my life greatly was an African American woman who was the first of her race to earn a Ph D in Economics from Yale and, ultimately, became one of my most significant mentors when I worked at the U S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
What is your best memory of a Women’s Foundation event or activity?
The best and most impactful memory that I have of a WFGKC event is of the tour that WFGKC took of the Greater Metropolitan Kansas City Area that was led by Sister Berta of OPERATION BREAKTHROUGH. Truly, it underscored the need for all of us to do more to impact positively the lives of women and girls. Yes, there were examples of how some are taking advantage of the needy but, by the same token, the success stories she told and the role models she introduced gave hope and made me just want to work harder so that these women and their families can succeed.
Why The Women’s Foundation?
Although much has been done and women are succeeding, there is still much work to be accomplished so that there is parity for women in today’s workforce. The dedication of WFGKC to lead the way in some of these initiatives is most important.
What are the other philanthropies you love?
Some on my rather long list include: The Links, Incorporated; Boys and Girls Clubs; NPR; and numerous diversity initiatives including those that focus on women entrepreneurs.
